This is an announcement for a surprise visit from a leading Canadian dance company which has a special relationship with Peterborough. Toronto-based Coleman Lemieux & Co have appeared here numerous times over the years and consider Peterborough their favourite city to visit. This is why we have a unique chance to see their latest offering. The company is en route from Toronto to Montreal next week and will stop into Peterborough on Monday June 2. The company is perhaps best known in Peterborough for its 1986 production of The Kudelka Taylor Project, which featured the work of former National Ballet director James Kudelka, and sold out Showplace Performance Centre.
This is a rare opportunity for students to experience one of Canada’s greatest works of modern ballet in an informal setting, accompanied by an introduction and discussion with the co-artistic director and dancers of Coleman Lemieux & Co.
The 30-minute In Paradisum will be performed at Market Hall in its entirety (without full theatrical lighting) by the same company of dancers who have been touring the work across Canada and the U.S. for the past 5 months. Prior to the performance co-artistic director Laurence Lemieux will talk about the themes of the work and how it came to be created. Following the performance, the company will engage in a question and answer session.
Since James Kudelka retired as Artistic Director of the National Ballet of Canada, he has entrusted the remounting of his signature modern works to Coleman Lemieux & Co. In Paradisum is the latest, following works such as Soudain, l’hiver dernier and 15 Heterosexual Duets, both seen in Peterborough in 2006. In Paradisum was created by James Kudelka for Les Grands Ballets Canadiens; it is one of his signature works. It was his first acknowledged masterpiece, created to an original score by Michael J. Baker. It was dedicated to and inspired by the death of his mother.
Space is limited.
