Marathon has been a hit at festivals around the world since its debut in 2012 and comes to Peterborough between the new Progress Festival in Toronto and the Undercurrents Festival in Ottawa. Marathon uses endless running as a metaphor for the daily experience of young Israelis, in a highly physical theatre work that pushes its three performers to the limit. Which of them will survive? As time goes by, their journey becomes more difficult and gradually the wounds of Israeli society open up and its default options become apparent. Through the performers’ own stories the work reflects on subconscious elements in Israeli culture and mentality, such as a constant sense of emergency and a desperate holding onto ideas and ideals.
Aharona Israel is a an interdisciplinary artist whose varied training – she is trained in dance and holds a B.A. in architecture – informs a body of work that combines intimate research into body and movement with a strong sensibility to social and political themes. Her works have been seen in festivals and theatres in Israel and across Europe since 2002. Read more below.
Marathon was generously supported by Big Sky Design.
Aharona Israel is a choreographer and interdisciplinary performance artist, born in Israel in 1973. She received her B.A. in Architecture from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem. She trained in dance in the Netherlands and Israel and lived for eight years in Amsterdam. Now living in the land of her birth, she shares personally and artistically a double cultural experience, both Israeli and European.
Since 2002 Aharona has been working as a free-lance choreographer, creating and showing her work in Israel and abroad. Her works have been shown in international festivals and theaters in Israel, Holland and Germany, among them: Acco festival IL, Tufa Festival Trier Germany, Testing-tools '11 Tel-aviv, Color dance festival Amsterdam, Perambulaçao at the Architecture Bianalle Roterdam Holland 2005.
As a choreographer her works have strong social-political references, combining theatre and text and drawing on her research in body and movement. With a varied background in the fields of arts, coming from the visual art and design field into dance, she brings a special interest in work for outdoor urban spaces, bringing together her understanding as an architect and her skills as a performer. She has a particular interest in multidisciplinary performances, interactive projects and site-specific works.
A Qi Gong practitioner, teacher of contact improvisation and improvisation dance, she makes atypical projects, using non-theatrical as well as conventional spaces. As a teacher she holds a regular course in dance improvisation for dancers and actors, and teaches classes and workshops regularly in various schools and independent formats.
