Tomson Highway - Songs in the Key of Cree

Songs in the Key of Cree is a compilation of songs written over the past thirty years by Cree-Canadian playwright/songwriter/pianist Tomson Highway. The songs in the show are taken from five of his musicals over the years, in order: “Rose,” “The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito,” “The (Post) Mistress,” “The Sage, the Dancer, and the Fool” and a new work in progress as yet to be named. What makes the songs unique is their Cree lyrics.

Public Energy is proud to present the full-length premiere of a play featuring music created by some of the city’s most talented theatre artists. Writer/actor Kate Story’s damned be this transmigration has already had a successful run in workshop form at the intimate Theatre On King. Now ready for its prime-time debut, the work will be seen with a new set - and dance numbers - created especially for the expansive Market Hall stage.

In Music Creates Opportunity, Crazy Smooth and his Bboyizm dance company continue to explore themes of personal expression through authentic street dance, and to push the art form at its edges. While Bboyizm's first stage piece, IZM, challenged audiences' expectations of both street dance and the stage, Music Creates Opportunity considers the intersection of rhythm, expression, and community in the making of music and dance.

Bernie Martin - Myrmidon

Partnering with Peterborough performance company Fleshy Thud, and A Certain Place: The Bernie Martin Festival, Public Energy brings back Myrmidon, a theatrical-poetical gem of a performance, written by the late Bernie Martin. Myrmidon is the story of one woman's magical, mystical, and mettlesome journey down a river, through a river, within a river. Written by multidisciplinary local artist Bernie Martin just before his death, this one-act play was originally presented at Peterborough's Union Theatre in 1995 by Writers Workshop Theatre.

petites danses is a collection of small dances with vast imagination. Thirteen performers. Four musical compositions. Eight dances. Each a world of its own. Created by celebrated choreographer and connoisseur of contemporary music, Marie-Josée Chartier’s petites danses is a study in perception. Set to the music of Linda C. Smith, Rodney Sharman, James Tenney and Nick Storring, Chartier creates unique choreographic worlds that shape and re-shape our perception of sound.

Under the full light of Biinaakwe Giizis (Falling Leaves Moon), the O’Kaadenigan Wiingashk Collective (OKW) invites audience(s) to gather and to celebrate music from near and far. Beats and Braids is a three day celebration, featuring performances by musicians and songwriters, bringing forth local and national artistic talent, while underscoring vital themes of reconciliation.

 Tanya Lukin Linklater and Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, along with Layli Long Solider, cheyanne turions, and Cris Derksen will present Constellation/conversationa new collaborative performance and installation work. Simpson’s song will serve as a generative departure for responses by artist, Tanya Lukin Linklater, poet, Layli Long Solider and curator, cheyanne turions. Following the responses a conversation between the five Indigenous women will take place in the gallery space. The conversation will aim to expand the conceptual spaces and may consider Indigenous peoples' relationships with objects, museums, repatriation and storytelling.
