“Linehan evokes a forceful emotional undertow with a rare economy of means.” The Guardian, 2003

Critically acclaimed and award winning UK-based choreographer Charles Linehan presents an innovative double bill comprising two recent works, Grand Junction and New Quartet. Linehan has developed his own clear choreographic language drawing on the individual human qualities of his dancers.

New Quartet is created for dancers Ben Ash, Greig Cooke, Andreja Rauch and Rahel Vonmoos. Initially submerged in a wall of sound, New Quartet opens up a distilled environment in which simplicity and detail are foregrounded by the fragmented space created by lighting designer Mikki Kunttu.

Grand Junction explores the shifting psychology and terrain of the relationship between the two performers, Greig Cooke and Andreja Rauch. Rigorously choreographed, densely atmospheric, and driven by Julian Swales’ compositions of cyclical acoustic guitar samples it is saturated in pure white lighting designed again by Mikki Kunttu.

Composition Workshop
with visiting artist Charles Linehan

Charles Linehan Co. is performing Grand Junction and New Quartet at the Market Hall Tuesday March 9.

“As a starting point, the participants will learn repertoire material. I will be looking for ways of processing prescribed material with creative input from those who attend. Ideas may involve developing a visual or dynamic interconnectedness between unrelated movement in space, developing partnering work from material that is not designed to go together and creating structures whereby the results can be placed together to form experiment sequences.”
– Charles Linehan
