Peterborough New Dance presents Interiors

A multi-generational exploration of family, love and imagination from Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie

Note: While Interiors is suitable for children aged 8+, it is not a children’s show.

Meet the artists – a reception will follow the Friday evening performance

Peterborough New Dance is proud to kick off its 14th season with Coleman Lemieux & Cie, the company that brought the exquisite Kudelka-Taylor Project to Peterborough in 2006. This time around CLC unleashes the exuberant talents of Jimmy and Juliette Coleman, aged 11 and 8, onto the delicate stage/world of their newest dance work, Interiors. Featuring performances by their parents, choreographer Laurence Lemieux, and Bill Coleman, this intimate evening of family and dance runs November 2 & 3, 2007 at 8pm at The Market Hall. Interiors marks the sixth presentation of Lemieux’s work in Peterborough since 1995.

Building on themes expressed in her last two works, Varenka! Varenka! and Les Paradis Perdus, choreographer Laurence Lemieux has created a three-part piece that speaks about childhood and the contemporary family. It delves into family relationships, the child’s world of make-believe, and what remains for parents beyond their children. Interiors is performed by the highly acclaimed dancers Laurence Lemieux and Bill Coleman and lets loose the exuberant talents of their children, Jimmy and Juliette, aged 11 and 8 respectively.

The work explores the idea of being confined in a space, and how one interacts with that space. It peeks through a window at a family, catching a glimpse of an intimate world. Looking at how adults can become mechanized through familial routine, and how children can transcend and change their environment through imagination, Interiors views this family from the outside in, allowing the children to be children and the family dynamics to be honest. Full of images that capture those precious family moments, the piece is set to excerpts from the exquisite Schubert Sonata in B flat, with set and costumes expertly designed by Yannik Larrivée and gorgeous lighting by Marc Parent.

Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie (CLC) is a marriage between urban and rural, stage and community, tradition and innovation, art and the wider world. Based in Montreal and presently working out of Toronto, CLC creates and produces collaborations in dance, music and the visual arts – performances that transcend boundaries through movement, dialogue and celebration, drawing on both conventional theatrical forms and innovative community-based approaches. Since 2000, it has produced and presented a diverse array of projects exemplifying artistic excellence and a compassionate community voice, qualities at the very heart of CLC’s self-definition.

The company has been involved in many national and international projects, and worked with choreographers such as Margie Gillis, Tere O’Connor, James Kudelka and William Douglas. Their reconstruction of Kudelka’s Fifteen Heterosexual Duets, which received its premiere with Peterborough New Dance in 2006, was called “one of the essential events of 2006” by The Globe and Mail, and Varenka! Varenka!, based on a Dostoevsky novel, was selected as one of the Top Ten Dances of 2003 by The Globe and Mail and NOW Magazine.

Jimmy Coleman is currently attending the National Ballet School’s professional program, and Juliette Coleman has been trained in ballet and gymnastics. Both appeared in Les Grands Ballets Canadiens’ Nutcracker in 2004 and participated in Jacob’s Pillow (the longest-running dance festival in the U.S.), performing in a revival piece by festival founder Ted Shawn.
