Coleman Lemieux and Compagnie make their long-awaited return to Peterborough with another program of classic masterworks by James Kudelka on January 24, 2010.

‘In Paradisum’ is an unforgettable evening of masterworks by one of Canada's greatest choreographers, James Kudelka. For those lucky enough to attend the Coleman Lemieux & Co program of Kudelka work which premiered in 2006 at a sold-out Showplace Performance Centre, this will be a chance to revisit the best work from that program  - Fifteen Heterosexual Duets (1991) and Soudain, l'hiver dernier (1987) - and see a new remount of one of his most acclaimed works, In Paradisum (1983). These dances have been performed by Coleman Lemieux & Co around the world to great acclaim over the past 4 years - from New York City and Santa Barbara to Beijing and Mongolia. Don’t miss this opportunity to welcome 13 dancers of CLC back to Peterborough.

The program begins with 11 dancers performing Fifteen Heterosexual Duets. One of Kudelka’s most celebrated works, a heart-pounding experience of split-second timing and complex partnering set to Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata. Watching CLC perform the work in 2009, Deborah Jowitt of the Village Voice had this to say: “Each duet stands out in some way…Tender, thoughtful, or carried away, the dancers make the work glow.”

The program’s middle piece is the haunting, poignant Soudain, l'hiver dernier, a delicate duet that leaves the spectator "spellbound by the emotional drama on the stage" (The Gazette, Montreal).

Ending the program is In Paradisum, described by The New York Times as a “maelstrom of anguish, grief and acceptance.” Dedicated to the memory of his mother, In Paradisum is a swirling, hypnotic work performed by 9 dancers that displays Kudelka’s trademark combination of quick and intricate movement with raw emotional power.

Formed in 2000, Coleman Lemieux & Co (CLC) has taken the Canadian dance scene by storm, often literally: the company is as well known for creating large-scale epic out door works in rural and urban settings as it is for touring to the world’s leading theatres. CLC’s relationship with James Kudelka is testimony to how far it has come since being founded by the husband and wife team of Bill Coleman and Laurence Lemieux. Not only is CLC the company Kudelka has chosen to remount many of his greatest contemporary dances, it is also the company for which he steadily creates new work. Peterborough audiences well remember the world premiere in 2006 of the Kudelka/Taylor Project, performed with counter-tenor Daniel Taylor, at Showplace. CLC’s reconstruction of Kudelka’s FifteenHeterosexual Duets was documented in a book published by Canada’s specialty dance press, Dance Collection Danse, also in 2006.
