This performance is a reading of an excerpt from Paddle Song. Paddle Song is a one-woman musical, which tells the life story of the late 1800’s trailblazer Mohawk poet, Pauline Johnson. A woman ahead of her time; this enigmatic, political performer toured Canada and the United States for over 30 years, was published in England, and returned to spend her later years in beautiful British Columbia amongst the West Coast First Nations, where she felt most at home. Paddle Song follows the journey of young Pauline canoeing the waters of the Grand River at home on Chiefswood Ontario, her promising career beginning to bloom, to becoming an ingratiated famous Canadian figure, hailed by the literati of England. Pauline was a true heroine of her time, when a mixed blood native artist, a Woman, travelling the robust countryside alone, touring and performing her own work, was completely unheard of. Paddle Song is Pauline’s remarkable story brought to life by talented Mohawk Actress Cheri Maracle, written for the stage by Dinah Christie, with Tom Hill.

Cheri Maracle is a multi-award nominated Actor/Singer/Songwriter from the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, Ontario. She has performed on stages across Turtle Island and abroad in the last 25 years.
