With explorations of iconic cowboy imagery inhabited by two magnificent Black performers, Braids & Heritage is full of unexpected juxtapositions of cultural themes that, in combination, act forcefully as jubilant celebration of diversity and creativity. Stacey Désilier and Jossua Satinée decolonize the mythology of the cowboy, taking the stage in cowboy boots and launching into a line dance. Playing with their striking resemblance to each other, the charismatic duo juxtapose square dancing with the cake walk, the moonwalk, and twerking in a choreographed piece drawing on both the spirit of the past and Afrofuturist visions.
Braids & Heritage will be followed by a line dancing workshop with the artists based on some of the movement from their show, Audience members can watch and listen, or get up and join the hoe down!
