Ode’min Giizis:
The Ode’min Giizis Strawberry Moon Festival IN PETERBOROUGH June 19-22, 2008

O’Kaadenigan Wiingashk and Public Energy invite you to come  experience a diversity of Indigenous artistic expression and events including gallery talks, film presentations and a music showcase at the Ode’min Giizis (Strawberry Moon) Festival. The Festival will celebrate this auspicious time of year and traditional Anishnaabe territory with a four-day multi-disciplinary arts festival in Peterborough, Ontario. Ode’min Giizis will feature local and visiting artists from the four directions who are unified by a strong self-determined aesthetic that honours traditional lands, culture and knowledge while also pushing boundaries in their own respective art forms. Events will take place at various venues, and will be co-presented by local arts organizations and businesses in a spirit of creativity, unity and the sweetness of the strawberry.   • Photographs of Local Anishnaabeg from The Balsillie Collection of Roy Studio Images in collaboration with the Peterborough Museum And Archives at Black Honey, 221 Hunter St. (June 19 -23)

Friday June 20th

Opening today in collaboration with Artspace at 7:00pm:

  • Exhibition and Artist’s Talk: The works of two artists share the Artspace gallery: Christi Belcourt’s Off the Map: Perspectives of Land and Water in Ontario, and Mary Anne Barkhouses’ Wake. The opening will feature a talk by Christi Belcourt called Naming Place: An Aboriginal Perspective of Land, Water & Maps, as well as a talk by Dr. Leanne Simpson called Taking Care of Gdoo-naaganinaa, Our Dish. Presented by O’Kaadenigan Wiingashk in collaboration with Artspace, 378 Aylmer St. (June 20 – July 12)

Saturday June 21st

  • Food by Aasmaabik: Shawn Adler’s Nish style home cooking! 11:00am outside 413 George St. Part of the 400 Block Party
  • Singing Workshop: Traditional Singing with Unity and Wshkiigamong Women’s Hand Drummers at 4:30pm, Market Hall, 336 George St. Workshop free – everyone welcome to participate and then take part in Gathering of Voices.
  • Performance: Gathering of Voices to close the 400 Block Party on George St. – all welcome to sing at 6:00pm
  • Video Screening: (post) Colonial Stress Disorder: imaging a way out at Gordon Best Theatre, 216 Hunter St. 8:00pm. Special added screening: World premiere of a new short film by Shelley Niro: The Flying Head. In collaboration with The Peterborough Arts Umbrella.

Sunday June 22nd

  • Storytelling: with Liz Osawamick and Nauni Parkinson at 1:00pm in Fleming Park, corner Aylmer and Brock St.
  • Concert: Tanya Tagaq at the Gordon Best Theatre. With Séan Conway and Sarah DeCarlo. Tickets $15 on sale at Bluestreak Records, 444 George St. N. Peterborough (705) 742-6078. Doors open at 8:00pm
